Hello, I hope you’re are having a Friday that is full of destruction and the possiblity of your enemy’s complete annihilation. I feel like my mind is only on one track today, the complete and utter destruction of my foes…in the flashiest way possible of course. I think the reason for that is because I have been following this kickstarter game for the past few days and rewatching the video footage and,it just makes you want to someone go bald, grab the nearest cat, and wait for someone to walk in so you can tell them how you are going to crush them.
I am of course speak of Planetary Annihilation. A game I touched on last week, but I feel it needs more justice than that so let’s get to it.
Man I’ve got to be care when posting that video. Everytime I post it somewhere I end up watching the whole thing, that is easily the 100th time I’ve watched it. So many of you may be pointing out right now that the trailer was indeed just a game visualization and not real gameplay itself. Yes you are correct, but the funny thing to me is if they had made the game exactly like that with a few more details here and there I’d play it until the day I die.
“We all know that the RTS genre has taken a hit. There just aren’t that many quality original RTS games coming out. If you love to play games like Total Annihilation your options are pretty limited. This is where Planetary Annihilation comes in. It is meant to be a truly innovative spin on what RTS games can and should be.”
This is statement from the front of their kickstarter page which I think really speaks to what their trying to do. It’s true the realm of the RTS genre which once stood tall amongst other games has fallen like the Roman Empire. Due to publishers not thinking it’ll work and trying to put their ”marketable” spin on it or honestly developers that want it make it so it can be easy to understand and reach a larger market the realm of RTS has fallen in obscurity. I am I die hard fan of RTS and think that we cannot survive of Starcraft and a few other titles alone. We need innovation and I believe Uber is trying to do that.
Look at it though, it’s like Total Annihilation on steroids and then you add the whole moon base angle and dropping asteriods on planets and it makes you really want to dress like some sort of bond villain or anime based super genius and laugh maniacally.
I digress however, the game idea itself look fantastic and I know that Uber are the people for the the job.
You see those? Those are indeed all the games that atleast one of the developers in Uber Entertainment has worked on. I see atleast six game that i play on a regular basis and really enjoy. This isn’t some indie team who has never made a game before these are people who had an extreme amount of cred within the industry and want to make a great game for the RTS genre.
The next point is the price. They are asking for a goal of $900,000 which many people are moaning is alot of money for a game….it’s not. It’s actually very cheap for a full fledged possibly revolutionary RTS game. Look at that list of game above you what do you think one of those game cost individually?4 Million? 7Million maybe? I have no clue, but I do know they are way more than $900,000. If you think that’s alot of money for a game then i’m sorry, but you have been spoiled by the Indie games that generally populate Kickstarter. They are cool game ,but they are generally worked on by 3 to 4 people. Uber ( I don’t know the exact number so feel free to correct me) has most likely around 20 to 30 people in thier offices. Which then all need to be payed for the game they are now working on. Uber though they are gamers to the core and really amazing people within the industry ( I had the pleasure of meeting some of them at the SMNC booth) they still run a business and this might be hard to understand ,but a business need money in order to run and give you those shiny objects you call games. So let’s shut up about the money aspect, I think it’s a fair price for what they are going to bring to the table.
They also just this week announcer the strech goals (which for those of you who don’t know are like addons for the game if they raise enough money for them after they reach their initial goal.) which were heavily based on the comments of what we as the users wanted in the game. Here take a look.
Here’s what Uber has to say as far as the details for the Stretch goals.
“One of the most popular questions we receive is whether or not naval warfare is going to be supported. We like naval warfare and want to have it in the game, but it’s going to be quite a bit of additional work. We want to not only support naval units but to do a great job at it. Likewise we want great support for water in the engine and the ability to create amazing planets that are largely water. First class support for naval means you will be able to have a combination of water and land planets as well as ice asteroids. Huge water only planets to play out all kinds of naval only scenarios will also be supported. Asteroid tsunamis FTW! Some of the water units we can expect include subs, amphibious units, floating buildings and of course battleships!”
So I don’t think I have to tell you how awesome this post is. I imagine having 5 planets in your system(by the way they have said is essence that you can have as many planets as your computer can handle) each player out of let’s say 4 for now has 1 planet and the moon around it after what seemed like the longest war ever the last remaining planet and the key for dominance is a single planet that is entirely made out of water which will render your current army useless until you take it and establish a base for further conquest. This will the result in 4 players fighting for dominance of it’s moon and then the surface which will lead to epic battle across the system for one planet and eventually all of them.
“Many of you are excited about the idea of more planet types and more gameplay to take specific advantage of those planets. This stretch goal is to add gas giant planets (similar to saturn or jupiter) to the game and an expanded set of orbital units with unique gameplay. Gas giants have no land in the real world but we may allow some buildable areas on “high mountains” on these planets. Imagine massive fusion reactors sucking helium-3 right out of the atmosphere and giant orbital defense lasers. A more expanded set of orbital recon units, space platforms and other types of orbital units based on your ideas will be added as well.”
Imagine if you will the same scenario as above with the water planet but there are 4 more gas giants one corresponding to each player and provides the bulk of your resources. Well you really want that water planet so you launch a surprise attack on player 3′s resource facility which his forces are tied up on the water planet now making him have to possible pull out of the fight for the water planets moon leaving you in the position to take it and give you the high ground in the war for the 5th planet.
See how much of an awesome battle could take place in this world? I mean I don’t think skirmish mode 9which they will support for this game) is the right word for it. Your talking about what could be war across planets and could last for hours and hours on end and I love that about an RTS.
My Final Word
As an RTS fan I will tell you that this game if Uber comes through (which I have no doubt that they will) I can say that this will be a game for the ages that anyone who love strategy or even just love the idea of commanding a massive army should buy.
How do you do this?
Go to their kickstarter page here and donate to the game $20 gets you the game, $40 gets you beta access, $50 gets you a limited edition in game commanded plus of the previous stuff, and $100 get’s you into the alpha plus a ton more and all the stuff previous. there’s alot more tiers, but those are the standard one. Go chewck it out find on you like a donate, please support a game that could breath new life in the RTS genre!
